The Latin Sax Quartet was formed with the encouragement of the legendary classical clarinetist, Latin Jazz saxophonist, composer, and Grammy winner, Paquito D’ Rivera.

This quartet combines the forces of Cuban saxophonists, Oscar Gongora, Alejandro Rios, Roman Filiú, and Raul Cordies.

Their goal is to demonstrate thebeauty of the classical saxophone by focusing on a largely unknown, yet rich and colorful repertoire of Cuban and Latin American composers.

LSQ made its formal debut for the Lyric Chamber Music Society of New York on March 19, 2008 at the Kosciuscko Foundation in NY. This performance entitled- “Cuba the Pioneers” with Paquito D’ Rivera was truly a success. Shortly after that they appeared at “The UBS Atrium” at the Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center in NJ.

On May 28, 2008 The Latin Sax Quartet performed at The Hudson Theater in NY- ”The Rite of Spring”- Benefit Event forThe Concert Artists Guild, which honored Chairman Emeritus Thomas C. Clark and Paquito D’ Rivera.

Inspired in Marcel Mule's French school, and followed in Havana by my father Tito and his "Conjunto Sinfónico de Saxofones" in 1943, Oscar Góngora and his Latin-Sax Quartet are an ideal example of what the Cuban classical school of the Saxophone has become. The group offers a perfect balance between the academic discipline and the typical charm and complex rhythms inherent to Cuban music.

A real Sax pleasure!
-Paquito D'Rivera.
