20th anniversary of the Pan-European Picnic

MTI presents images of Iron Curtain breakup

Budapest, August 19 (MTI) - The Pan-European picnic which took place near Sopron on the Hungarian-Austrian border 20 years ago was an important stage in Hungary's political transformation as well as leading to German reunification. MTI is now presenting to the public previously unseen photographs and other related material on its website at http://1989.mti.hu/.

The MTI photographers not only recorded the historic opening of the border, which allowed hundreds of East Germans to cross over, but events in the days surrounding that famous event. Images captured include the moment that an escaped East German family that had spent the night in the woods crossed over the border with their child at dawn and a girl who tried to swim cross Lake Ferto which straddles the border. MTI is also presenting a display at the memorial in Sopronpuszta, the site of the Pan-European picnic which on Wednesday will receive a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
