Two artists. One night at sea. A moon that never stopped appearing in their paintings.
More than four decades ago, José Chiu and Félix González Sánchez left Cuba by sea. During that journey, the moon became etched in their memory and, over the years, turned into a recurring presence in their work.
THE MOON SAW US FLEE is a documentary about exile, memory, art, and resistance.
Through their own testimonies and the works they have created over decades, José and Félix recall the night of their escape, reflect on the country to which they could never return, and revisit painful chapters of Cuban history, including the UMAP forced-labor camps established in Cuba during the 1960s.
Their paintings have carried that memory beyond exile and into places such as the United States Capitol.
This film does not attempt to speak for them.
It lets them speak.
Because some memories survive the passage of time.
Some countries continue to exist within those who were forced to leave them.
And there is a moon that, after so many years, still seems to be watching that night.
