The Archdiocese of Miami will re-open St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, a long time landmark in Miami Gardens, with a Mass at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. The Mass will be celebrated by Father Chanel Jeanty, chancellor for canonical affairs of the archdiocese, who has been appointed as the new pastor of the parish by Archbishop Thomas Wenski.

St. Philip, a predominantly African-American parish established in 1951, was merged with Holy Redeemer Church in Liberty City in 2009, under an archdiocesan reorganization plan that also affected 12 other churches. Haiti-born Father Jeanty entered the seminary in 1996 and was ordained for the Archdiocese of Miami in 2004. He has served as an associate pastor at St. Bartholomew in Miramar and he has studied in Rome, Italy. In 2009, Father Jeanty became the associate pastor of St. Rose of Lima in Miami Shores, where he served until his appointment to St. Philip Neri, which takes effect Oct. 1.

Archbishop Wenski will celebrate a grand opening Mass at the church at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6. St. Philip Neri is located at 15700 N.W. 20 Ave. Rd., Miami Gardens, FL 33054.
