(Miami) Falleció el P. Pepito García

Father Jose “Pepito” Garcia, a Cuban priest who came to South Florida 25 years ago and endeared himself to the community to the point of having a street named in his honor, has died at age 83.

He served a few months at St. Timothy Parish in Miami before being named associate pastor at St. Kevin, where he remained from 1987 until his retirement in 2009. In June 2010, a portion of Bird Road, from 117th to 127th Avenues, was re-named “Father Jose ‘Pepito’ Garcia Way” by the Miami-Dade County Commission.

Father Garcia was born Feb. 7, 1929 in Holguin, a province in eastern Cuba. He was ordained a priest May 11, 1952 for the then Diocese of Camaguey by Archbishop Enrique Perez Serantes of Santiago de Cuba. He served for 18 years as pastor of San Jose Church in Puerto Padre and 16 more as pastor of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad in Camaguey City.

A viewing will take place between 8:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 6, at St. Kevin Church, located at 12525 SW 42nd Street in Miami. The viewing will continue on Monday between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 7, also at St. Kevin Church, followed by internment at the Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, located at 11411 NW 25th Street in Miami.
